Earning your Certified Nurse Aide certification in Texas is a good opportunity for employment and career advancement in the healthcare industry. This article walks you through the five steps to becoming a CNA in the state of Texas in 2017.
Step 1: Evaluate Your Options to Become a CNA in Texas
For people who are interested in becoming a Certified Nurse Aide in Texas, there are several processes that enable you to earn your CNA certification. The first step is deciding if you need to pass the National Nurse Assessment Program (NNAAP) examination to get certification in Texas.
There are currently seven routes to the CNA exam in the state of Texas. These routes include Nurse Aide Training and a Competency Evaluation Program (NATCEP) approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS), military service, or RN or LVN programs. Passing the NNAAP exam allows students to join the Texas Nurse Aide Registry (NAR) and work as a CNA in the state. There are also guidelines for qualifying for CNA certification by waiver or reciprocity.
7 Routes by Examination
Currently, there are seven different eligibility categories that allow applicants to get their CNA certification in Texas by examination. They are:
- New or Retrained Nurse Aide: If you have completed a DADS-approved training program in the last 2 years (24 months), then you are eligible to take the CNA exam.
- Nurse Aides with Expired Status: If you have not been employed in the past 24 months in the healthcare industry, and you have not completed the 24 hours of in-service education, your status is deemed expired. You can acquire authorization to retake the exam by calling (512-438-2050) or filling out form NAR-5528.
- Nurse Aides with Equivalent Military Training: If you have completed 100+ hours of military training that has been deemed equivalent to the training required of Certified Nurse Aides after July 1, 1989, then you are eligible to take the exam. You can call (512-438-2017) or fill out form 5511-NATCEP to gain permission to test.
- RN/LVN Graduate: If you have graduated from a state-accredited nursing school in any state in the last 2 years (24 months), then you are eligible to take the exam. Call (512-438-2017) or fill out form 5512-NATCEP to gain permission to test.
- RN/LVN Student: If you have completed the basic nursing training courses from a state-accredited school or program, then you are eligible to test. Call (512-438-2017) or fill out form 5513-NATCEP to gain authorization to take the CNA state exam.
- Out-of-State Training: If you have completed a state-approved training program in another state within the last 24 months, then you are eligible to take the exam. Call (512-438-2017) or fill out form 5510-NATCEP to gain permission to test.
- Training Program Closed: If you have completed the necessary training within the last 24 months from a CNA program that is now closed, then you are eligible to take the exam. You do not need state authorization to test.
By Reciprocity or Waiver
Reciprocity
If you are already a CNA in another state, you can apply to transfer your certification to the state of Texas. You must request a criminal background check from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and you must fill out form 5505-NAR.
All applicants must complete and sign section 1 of the form. If you are certified as a CNA in California, Colorado, Illinois, Missouri, or North Carolina, you do not need to complete section 2 of the form. If your Certified Nurse Aide certification does not have an expiration date, then you will also need to fill out form 5506-NAR to verify employment.
You must mail forms 5505-NAR and 5506-NAR, a photocopy of your photo I.D., and the results of your criminal background check to: Texas Nurse Aide Registry, P.O. Box 149030, Mail Code E-414, Austin, TX 78714-9030. The process should take about two to three weeks.
Waiver
Waiver certification pertains to training completed before July 1st, 1989, when the Texas state standards changed. If you completed CNA training before that time, you may qualify for waiver certification. You must mail completed copies of forms 5506-NAR and 5507-NAR with the other required documents to the Texas Nurse Aide Registry. You can also call the Texas Nurse Aid Registry at (512-438-2050) to obtain more information about how to qualify.
Step 2: Complete Your CNA Training
To complete your training, you must take a certified nursing assistant training program that has been approved by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). Below is a summary of CNA training and some information on choosing the program that is right for you.
There are over 800 Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Programs (NATCEPs) that meet the state requirements for CNA training. There are a few basic qualities that will be the same for whichever program you choose, but choosing one that fits your schedule and lifestyle is most important.
Minimum Education Requirements
There are no minimum education requirements for CNAs in the state of Texas. A high school diploma or GED is not required to become a CNA in Texas.
Before Enrollment
Any NATCEP in Texas must first ensure that enrollees do not have a criminal background that would prevent them from working in the field, and that they are not listed on the Employee Misconduct Registry (EMR) or have a “Revoked” Status in the Nurse Aide Registry. Once these background checks have cleared, trainees are allowed to begin their nurse aide training.
Training Providers
All NATCEP providers must be registered with DADS and fill out the appropriate paperwork to receive their training credentials. The NATCEP cannot be given or led by any facility that has operated under a waiver, review, or denial of payment in the last two years. It must be in good standing with the state.

Program Instructor
Program instructors are required to be licensed nurses in Texas, have at least one year of experience in the nursing field, and have taken a class or have experience in adult education.
Length
Any NATCEP must include a minimum of 100 hours of training, comprised of 60 hours of classroom training and 40 hours of clinical training in a nursing facility. During the classroom training, students must take at least 16 introductory hours before doing any direct resident care. Students are not allowed to have any direct contact with a resident during their classroom training.
Most NATCEPs last between four and six weeks, although some CNA programs are a little longer or shorter. The length depends on how many classes the 100 hours of training is divided into. It’s important to choose a program that will work for your lifestyle and schedule, so you may want to check if part-time training, day classes, evening classes, or weekend classes are available among the Texas-approved programs. Make sure that the pacing of the CNA course won’t be too difficult or stressful for you to succeed.
Curriculum
The NATCEP, or CNA Certified Nurse Aide training program, must teach the DADS curriculum. This CNA curriculum is a thorough overview of all of the skills that trainees will need when working with the elderly or long-term care patients. It focuses on basic nursing, interpersonal skills, and mental health skills, especially in relation to patients with dementia.
NATCEPs must also review the rights of residents and patients and explain how those patients should be treated and cared for. NATCEPS are responsible for making sure that trainees don’t use any skills or exercise any training in which they have not been deemed proficient. At the end of the CNA program, trainees are ready to take the NNAAP examination and become a Certified Nurse Aide in Texas.
Cost and Online Training
It’s also crucial to keep your budget in mind. Costs of CNA programs vary from school to school, with university programs being more expensive than state or online schools. It is important to note that there are currently no state-approved schools for Certified Nursing Assistant training that are free. While some schools advertise this, they do not meet the state requirements established by DADS. However, you can check the school list to learn the cost ranges and determine whether there is any state-approved online training.
Online courses do tend to be cheaper, but they also have a higher rate of failure. Make sure you are comfortable learning mostly from websites and textbooks before you sign up for an online course. Many students need the hands-on instruction that a brick and mortar school provides.
Step 3: Take Your CNA State Exam
Once you have completed your CNA training, it’s time to register and take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) exam. The NNAAP exam tests candidates on the required “minimal competency” or basic skills that Certified Nursing Assistants need in Texas.
Registration and Important Details
The first step is registering for the CNA state exam. You can register by completing an application online on the Person VUE website, or you can submit a paper copy by mail. If you have any questions about the application process, contact at (866) 377-0252. In 2017, the exam fee is $85.50 for the Written & Skills exam, or the Oral & Skills exam. The written or oral exam separately are $22.50, and the skills evaluation is $63. The first time you take the exam, you must take both the written and skills evaluations.
After you fill out your registration online, you will receive an email as your authorization to test. Make sure you keep this authorization. The exams are held at Regional Test Sites. You can access a complete list of the Texas locations here. There must be at least four testers registered to hold a test at a particular location, so some testers may have to drive up to 60 miles.
On the day of the test, you will need to bring two forms of accepted I.D., three No. 2 pencils, an eraser, and a watch with a second hand. All other materials will be provided by the testing site. Some of the main accepted forms of I.D. are a driver’s license, a school or work I.D., or a passport.
Examination Details
The NNAAP examination is the Texas competency evaluation determined by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services (DADS). The CNA exam is comprised of two parts: a written or oral examination and a skills evaluation.
The Written Examination
There are two options for the written exam. Testers can take the written exam if they are comfortable with the written English version, but testers who would rather take the exam orally can choose between an English or Spanish Oral Examination. Both versions of the examination have 70 questions and take 2 hours to complete. The Pearson VUE website offers a Self-Assessment Reading Test that you can take to determine which exam version gives you a better chance of success. The test is a simple multiple-choice exam. Once you have completed the reading test, tally your score. If it is less than 17, the oral exam may give you a better chance of success.
The Pearson VUE website provides a CNA practice test as well as an exam outline. This allows you to review the subjects covered in the Certified Nurse Aide test and determine what percentage of the test each subject comprises.
The Skills Evaluation
The skills evaluation is the section of the test that focuses on “real world” skills. The test is given by a Nurse Aide Evaluator, and another volunteer acts as the client in the care setting. The skills evaluation is a random sampling of 5 of the 22 CNA skills. One of the 5 tested skills will always be the hand hygiene skill. The other four are randomly selected, but one of them will require taking a measurement such as blood pressure, weight, etc.
This test is thirty minutes long. You will perform each skill in front of the evaluator, treating the volunteer client as you would a normal client. There is always a critical step for each skill that if omitted will be an automatic fail for the skill. You must perform both the critical step and the minimum required steps to meet that task’s basic requirements, or “cut score.” To pass the skills evaluation, you must correctly complete 4 of the 5 skills in your test. The 22 skills in the skills evaluation can be found on pages 14-15 in the Pearson VUE nurse aide section.
Test Results
After you have completed your tests, an administrator will fax them to an outside location for scoring. You will normally receive your scores at the test location on the same day. They will be either pass or fail scores. If you fail one or both sections, you must schedule a retake for the failed sections. There will be information on how to schedule retakes on your score report. The report will also let you know which skills were deemed unsatisfactory.
Retakes
You are allowed three retakes in the two years after you have completed Certified Nursing Assistant training. If you fail either test three times, you will be required to retake your training with a state approved program and retake the CNA exam again. Once you have passed both portions of the NNAAP exam, you have earned your CNA certification. Congratulations!
Step 4: CNA Registry and Certification Renewal
Now that you have your CNA certification in Texas, you can be hired as a Certified Nurse Aide anywhere in the state. There are a few steps to register and maintain your status on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry (NAR), which we review below.
Get Certified
Once you have passed the NNAAP exam, your name will be submitted to the DADS to be placed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry. It is free for a CNA to be listed on the NAR. Your CNA certification will be mailed to you in four to six weeks. You are now eligible to seek employment as a nurse assistant in the state of Texas. It is important to note that you are responsible for ensuring that your name is listed on the Texas NAR. CNAs can verify certification status online. If it is not listed there, you are not employable. You are also required to register in the DADs credential management system.
Keeping Your Certification Current
You are required to seek a CNA renewal every 2 years. It is free of charge to renew your CNA certification in Texas. The renewal requires 24 hours of in-service training and employment verification in Texas in the past 2 years. There is a list of more than 100 in-service education programs approved by the DADS as well as computer-based training (CBTs). CBTs can comprise up to 12 hours of your required 24 hours every 2 years. The modules are accessible by any Windows PC, and there are 6 separate modules that users can take. Make sure to keep your certificate of learning so that the module is credited towards your renewal.

The state of Texas also requires that you maintain employment as a Certified Nurse Aide for a CNA renewal.
