CNA practice tests can be an effective tool in preparing for the state board of nursing certification examination. Many of these resources are formatted very similar to the actual tests. This is an advantage to the test taker because not only will they become more familiar with the CNA testing process but it also assists in identifying areas of weakness in which more study is needed. These tools can be accessed within the nursing assistant course and from outside sources as well.
What is a CNA Testing
A nursing assistant certification examination is the testing process for those who wish to be placed on a state nurse aide registry. Unless transferring this certification from another state, this certification exam is required to obtain employment as a certified nursing assistant. The test consists of two to three parts, depending on the state. Portions of the test include multiple choice questions and clinical skills demonstrations. Most formats require online testing but written versions may still be available. The number of questions may vary, but generally falls between 60-100 questions, with 75 being the golden number. Only after the individual successfully takes and passes the exam may they be certified to practice as a nursing assistant.
Requirements for Exam Eligibility
There are requirements that must be fulfilled to sit for examination. This includes but is not limited to successful completion of a CNA program, satisfactory criminal background report and pre-registration and payment. The applicant must also be able to verify some personal identification information, such as date-of-birth, residence and social security number. Some states may allow experience in lieu of completion of an approved program and a few states do not charge for CNA testing. Proof of eligibility to test must be provided prior to registration or the applicant will be denied. Testing within one-year of verified experience and course completion is almost always required. Those who wait longer will typically have to complete another course or take a refresher course.
Test Preparation
Preparing for this exam is highly recommended and there are a variety of ways in which the learner can do so. Most courses will provide booklets, either electronic or paper that cover what the prospective CNA needs to learn. Information regarding scope-of-practice and other regulations, bodily functions and even elemental pharmacology for nursing assistants may be on the exam just to name a few topics. Questions can pertain to proper procedure, safety and chain-of-command in the workplace as well. Therefore, it is important to review materials covered within the course. All CNA course work should be completed, even if it is not graded. Those seeking additional practice may also take advantage of other materials outside of the class.
Practice Tests
In addition to practicing skills and studying course materials, free CNA practice tests are also helpful. There are many sites that allow the user to download these tools either via Pdf or as a web page. Several will also allow the learner to access the answers in order to check their work. A popular venue for many students are the sites that automatically grade and display results, a 60 question quiz is available here. After completion of the practice test it is scored, results are displayed immediately.
Accessing Study Materials at no Cost
As previously mentioned, several of these programs are free to the learner. There is no need to purchase these practice exams or sometimes the study guides. The administration agency for CNA testing may even supply these materials to applicants after registration has been completed; although they may not be as in depth as other practice exams available. Preparation testing formats can consist of those taken entirely online and graded automatically, pdf print outs and web pages. Not all practice tests come with a study guide and some may be tailored for a specific state. Course textbooks may also have links to supplemental materials. This website provides listing of the free CNA practice tests by state.
